Casual visits to the shelter are no longer feasible. Adoption can be facilitated through our online adoption application, allowing for a streamlined process. Our pets hold great significance to us, and considerable financial and emotional investments have been made in their well-being. The objective is to ensure the compatibility between the individual and the animal, striving for a perfect match.
To start the adoption process:
The current adoption fees range from $125 to $200 for dogs, and $75 for cats. These fees help cover the cost of:
Yes! While casual visits are no longer available, we arrange scheduled meet-and-greet sessions for approved adoption applicants. This ensures that you and your potential new pet are a good match before finalizing the adoption.
We, at Pet Savers, want every adoption to be a success. Our goal is to rehome dogs/cats into their forever homes. The decision to adopt should be taken seriously, along with the 10–15 year (in most cases) financial and emotional commitment. More often than not, when an animal is returned we find it is an owner issue and not a pet issue. Please seriously consider the commitment you made to your pet at the time of adoption before making the decision to return your pet.
However, if you decide you do need to return the pet, please adhere to the following:
You will receive a return email within 48 hours of your email with a date you can return the animal. We appreciate your understanding.
Most of our animals are mixed breeds, but occasionally we do have purebred animals available for adoption. All of our pets, regardless of breed, receive the same level of care and love.
We make every effort to have pets spayed or neutered before adoption. In some cases, very young animals may be adopted with a spay/neuter contract requiring the procedure to be completed by a certain age.
Yes, all of our pets receive age-appropriate vaccinations. We provide vaccination records with each adoption, and we recommend continuing with regular veterinary care.
We share all the information we have about each pet's background, temperament, and any special needs. However, many of our animals come to us as strays or surrenders with limited history. We do our best to assess each animal's personality and needs during their time with us.
Yes, we test dogs for heartworms and provide treatment when necessary. Some dogs may be adopted while undergoing heartworm treatment, and we provide full information about their treatment plan.
Typically, the information listed in an animal’s profile is all we know. Our website is updated every 2–3 days. It’s likely the pet you’re interested in is at the shelter, but sometimes (if it’s a highly adoptable pet), the animal may have been adopted. If you want to be sure, email petsavers@petsaversshreveport.org before coming out.
Our hours of operation and directions to our shelter are listed on our home page.
We do make adoptions to areas outside of Shreveport/Bossier and out-of-state; however, we do not ship or transport at this time. If you are driving from a long distance and wish to apply to adopt one of our animals, please email petsavers@petsaversshreveport.org for an adoption application. Please indicate which animal or animals you are interested in. Applications are subject to approval and veterinary references will be checked.
Absolutely! We encourage adopting bonded pairs when appropriate, and we're happy to work with families who want to adopt multiple pets.
We have many volunteer opportunities available! You can help with animal care, transportation, administrative tasks, events, and more. If you’d like to volunteer, please email petsavers@petsaversshreveport.org with what you wish to do and your availability. If you can’t volunteer on a “regular” basis, we will add you to our email group for “project” volunteer opportunities. Volunteers need to be at least 18 years or older to volunteer at the shelter.
No prior experience is necessary! We provide training and orientation for all volunteers. What's most important is a love for animals and a willingness to help.
We appreciate any amount of time you can offer! Some volunteers help a few hours a month, while others volunteer weekly. We work with your schedule to find opportunities that fit your availability.
Volunteers must be 18 or older for most positions. However, we do accept volunteers aged 16-17 with parental consent and supervision. We also have family volunteer opportunities available.
Fostering a pet requires a special type of person. We look for foster homes where there is someone usually always home and a person who has the time, patience, and experience to foster. If you feel you have what it takes, please email petsavers@petsaversshreveport.org for a foster application. Please keep in mind the foster homes we typically look for are homes that can foster cats/kittens, larger dogs, or sick/injured animals. Healthy and easy-to-place animals typically don’t go into foster, unless we’re having space issues.

P.O. Box 29163If you have a dog or cat that you need to surrender, please understand that we are at capacity almost always at the shelter; HOWEVER, we do make exceptions in certain situations if space is available.
Email petsavers@petsaversshreveport.org with a picture of your pet, along with a brief biography (including whether or not the animal is spayed/neutered, UTD on shots, heartworm preventive, etc.) and why you need to surrender the pet. Please be advised that it may take up to 24 hours for us to respond.
If we can’t take a pet: While we would like to take every pet that comes to our door, we simply cannot. Our space is limited and we try very hard to take in animals that we know we can find good homes for quickly in order to fill that empty space with another animal. We do, however, offer many other alternatives to coming to the shelter.
You can also place your pet in The Shreveport Times for free if the animal is a “free to good home” animal, by calling 318-459-3333. PLEASE BE CAREFUL, though—bad people look for free pets! We advise you to screen any potential adopter thoroughly by contacting their vet and conducting a home visit.
